ADMC was awarded a 3 year, multi state, USDA/NRCS CIG in 2006 to demonstrate drainage water management (DWM). This innovative multi-state project -- covering Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana, and Ohio -- will improve and refine regional recommendations that are necessary to facilitate and encourage the widespread adoption of DWM and maximize the agronomical and environmental benefits provided by the practice.
In addition to practical considerations in developing an approach that provides operational guidance for DWM in each of these states, our coalition will examine the economic effect on-farm. Farmers will play a central role in assessing the economic effects of DWM on farm profitability. Each demonstration farm will use the latest technologies, including satellite-controlled water control structures, resulting in a truly managed and remotely monitored water table by farming operators via internet. Through implementation of the project, significant data will be obtained to document nutrient savings from DWM, a necessary step in nutrient trading.
The project is lead by ADMC, and also includes the University of Minnesota, Iowa State University, the University of Illinois, Purdue University, Ohio State University, as well as the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, the National Corn Growers Association and numerous other partners.
Please note that not all of the sites function by satellite, data for these sites will be posted in summary at the end of the growing season.
